How to create an Abstract Composition using parametric filter in Photoshop?

For the second day of my 30-minute creative challenge, I decided to explore the world of abstraction using Photoshop, specifically focusing on how to use the Parametric Filter in Photoshop to create unique effects. It was a playful experiment, a way to let my creativity flow and focus on positivity and good vibes. 🌈

An Abstract Composition using parametric filter in Photoshop

This session reminded me to enjoy the process rather than obsess over the outcome. Each small step feels like progress, and even after just two days, I can see an improvement in my approach. Today’s creation is a simple yet intriguing blend of textures, filters, and typography.

Here’s how I created this abstract composition, step by step. I hope it inspires you to try something new and keep your creative energy alive! ✨

How to create an Abstract Composition using parametric filter in Photoshop?

1. Open Your Image

Begin by opening Photoshop and selecting an image that catches your eye. I opted for an image with interesting textures to build upon.

2. Convert to a Smart Object

Right-click on your image layer in the Layers Panel and choose Convert to Smart Object. This allows for non-destructive editing, so you can adjust your edits later if needed.

3. Separate the Object and Background

Double-click the Smart Object to open it in a new window. Separate the main object from the background, placing each on a separate layer. This gives you more flexibility when refining your composition.

4. Apply the Glass Filter

Return to the main composition and navigate to Filter > Parametric Filter > Glass. Adjust the settings to add texture and distortion, creating a dynamic abstract effect. Play around with the settings until it looks just right for your design.

5. Mask the Filter

  • Add a mask to the filtered layer by clicking the Add Layer Mask button at the bottom of the Layers Panel.

  • Fill the mask with black to hide the filter effect completely.

  • Use a soft white brush to paint on the mask, selectively revealing the effect in areas where you want it to show.

6. Add Text with a Filter Overlay

  • Open the Smart Object again and add a Text Layer.

  • Apply the same Glass Filter to the text for consistency, ensuring the text blends seamlessly with the design.

  • Adjust the text size, style, and placement to enhance the composition.

7. Save and Finalise

Save the Smart Object and return to the main composition. Make any final tweaks to refine your abstract artwork. And there you have it—your unique creation is ready!

What I Learned Today

This project was all about embracing experimentation and learning through doing. I discovered how small tweaks, like masking and filter adjustments, can transform a simple concept into something visually striking.

This creative challenge has already taught me to approach my projects with curiosity and a sense of playfulness. It’s not about perfection; it’s about progress—and I’m thoroughly enjoying the journey so far. 😊
